Some Unexpected Benefits of Spring Cleaning

Spring is an exciting time of year! Longer days, more sunshine and life literally bursting from nature everywhere we look.  And there is something that urges us to keep in step with the renewal process of this brilliant season.  Many of us have the desire to refresh our homes and clear away clutter, otherwise known as “spring clean.”  Did you know this isn’t just good for your home, research shows it is good for your mental health as well!

Dr. Michael Messina “Spring cleaning can help you regain a sense of control over the environment in your home, reduce your stress levels, increase your focus, improve your mood, and may even reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

Some of the health benefits to spring cleaning include feeling accomplished, improved focus, destress and it gets you moving.  These benefits along with the benefits of taking care of one of your largest investments means that spring cleaning is time well spent.

Today I am sharing a list of how to start:

Follow this list to help you know where to begin so you don’t get overwhelmed.  Spring is a long season, so don’t try and do everything in one weekend.  Choose one or two items to complete each week.

  • Declutter your home before you start cleaning.

This may be one of my favorite things to do.  Decluttering creates space and space creates peace.  Here’s a good rule to follow – have you used it in the last year? If the answer is no, but you can’t get rid of it find a good storage system and put it away. Having a neat and clean space promotes better focus and motivation.

  • When cleaning, start small.

Pick a closet or a small room to get started. Cleaning produces a tangible product that you see and feel which leads to satisfaction and feeling accomplished. So, focus on cleaning one space at a time.

  • Involve everyone in the house.

Break up that checklist by assigning jobs to kids. They may grumble at the beginning, but they will benefit from the same feelings of accomplishment. Even the littlest ones will surprise you at what they can do.  Give them small jobs then celebrate their completion.

  • Get all your senses engaged.

Open the windows to let the fresh air into your home. There aren’t too many days in Houston, we can take advantage of the great weather. Play your favorite music while you clean. Light a candle or use essential oils while you declutter and re-organize. You will be amazed at how fast time flies and how calm you will feel.

Helping you know how to take care of your home is my number goal as your Realtor.  I want to help you make SMART REAL ESTATE DECISIONS so that when you are ready to sell the stress level is diminished and you get this very most for your home.
