Summer Home Maintenance Inside & Out…

As we dive into summer, it’s the perfect time to tackle some essential home maintenance tasks. Not only will these chores keep your home in it’s best shape, but they’ll also prepare you for the upcoming hurricane season. Plus, I’ll share some tips on maintaining your landscape in our humid June climate. Let’s get started!

Preparing for Hurricane Season

Houston’s hurricane season runs from June through November, so it’s crucial to be prepared. Here are some key steps to ensure your home is ready:

  1. Inspect and Clean Gutters: Clear out leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage. This helps prevent water damage during heavy rains.
  2. Check Roof and Siding: Inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles and check siding for any cracks or loose panels. Repair any issues to protect your home from strong winds and rain.
  3. Secure Outdoor Furniture: High winds can turn outdoor furniture into projectiles. Secure or store away patio furniture, grills, and other outdoor items.
  4. Trim Trees and Shrubs: Trim any dead or overhanging branches that could potentially damage your home during a storm.
  5. Create an Emergency Kit: Assemble a hurricane emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents.
  6. Storm Shutters: If you have storm shutters, ensure they are in good working order. If not, consider installing them or having plywood ready to cover windows.

Landscaping Tips for Houston’s Humid June Climate

Houston’s humidity can be tough on your landscape. Here’s how to keep your yard looking its best:

  1. Watering Schedule: My go to home inspector advices to water your lawn and plants early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation. Deep watering a few times a week is more effective than frequent shallow watering.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around plants and flower beds to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth.
  3. Mowing: Keep your lawn mower blades sharp and mow at a higher setting to promote deep root growth and retain moisture.
  4. Pest Control: The humid climate can attract pests. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests and treat them promptly with appropriate pesticides or natural remedies.
  5. Fertilization: Fertilize your lawn and plants in early summer to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Choose a slow-release fertilizer to avoid over-fertilization.

General Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

  • Air Conditioning Maintenance: Have your AC unit serviced to ensure it’s running efficiently. Replace filters regularly to improve air quality and system performance.
  • Window and Door Seals: Check the seals around windows and doors for any gaps or cracks. Proper sealing helps keep your home cool and reduces energy costs.
  • Ceiling Fans: Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to create a cooling breeze. Fans should run counterclockwise during the summer.
  • Outdoor Lighting: Clean and inspect outdoor light fixtures. Replace any burned-out bulbs to enhance your home’s safety and security.
  • Deck and Patio: Clean and inspect your deck or patio for any signs of wear and tear. Reseal or stain the surface to protect it from the elements.
  • Grill Maintenance: Clean your grill thoroughly and check for any leaks or blockages. A well-maintained grill ensures safe and delicious summer barbecues.

Take the time to do these summer home maintenance chores, you’ll not only enhance your home’s appearance and functionality but also ensure it’s prepared for whatever the season brings and secure the value of your home. There are truly so many benefits!
