Get Your Pool Ready for the Texas Summer

It’s officially pool season in Houston! Whether you use your pool every day or just enjoy it on the weekends, a little prep work now can save you time, money, and frustration all summer long. Let’s make sure your backyard stays the relaxing retreat it’s meant to be.
When I go to list a home that has a pool, I always ask if everything is working properly on the pool. I do this because pool repairs can be costly and you don’t want to get in the middle of an option period and be surprised by a few thousand dollars worth of pool repair. So, here’s what I recommend to my clients this time of year when it comes to getting your pool summer-ready:
✅ 1. Inspect the Pool Equipment
Before diving in, give your pool equipment a once-over:
- Pump & Filter – Make sure everything is running smoothly. Look for leaks, strange noises, or cracks in hoses.
- Timer Settings – Adjust your pump timer for longer run times as temps rise. During peak heat, your pool may need 8–12 hours of circulation a day.
- Heater – Run a quick test to make sure it’s functional, even if you don’t use it regularly.
📌 Tip: If anything looks questionable, call a pool technician now—schedules fill up fast in June.
✅ 2. Balance the Water Chemistry
Houston heat plus heavy rain can throw off your water balance fast.
- Test your water weekly – Check with the pro’s for exactly what levels you need.
- Shock the pool – After storms or parties, a shock treatment helps keep algae at bay.
- Add stabilizer – This helps chlorine work longer under the intense summer sun.
📌 Not sure what to add? Local pool stores will test your water for free and recommend what you need.
✅ 3. Clean Your Pool Thoroughly
Get it sparkling before the heat hits full force. Mom Tip: This is a great summer chore for the kids!
- Skim leaves and debris
- Brush walls and steps to prevent algae growth
- Vacuum the pool floor (manually or with your robot cleaner)
- Empty skimmer and pump baskets regularly
💡 Want to save time? Set a reminder to clean your filters monthly during peak swim season.
✅ 4. Inspect Pool Safety Features
This is a big one—especially if you have kids, pets, or guests:
- Check fences and gates for damage, secure latches, and required height.
- Inspect pool alarms or covers if you use them.
- Ensure pool rules are clear if you host summer parties.
📌 A safe pool is a fun pool. A quick check now brings peace of mind all season.
✅ 5. Spruce Up the Pool Area
This is the fun part! A few quick updates can make your poolside feel like a resort:
- Power wash pool decks or concrete
- Replace faded cushions or worn umbrellas
- Add solar string lights or LED lanterns for nighttime ambiance
- Stock up on towels, floats, and sunscreen
Houston Pro Tip: Watch Your Water Bill
With summer heat and evaporation, your pool may need more frequent refilling. If your water usage spikes, it might be worth checking for small leaks around fittings or underground lines.
If you’re thinking of selling your home this summer, a clean and well-maintained pool is a huge bonus for buyers. I’ve had many clients say the pool sealed the deal—so don’t overlook this asset!
