Headed Out of Town? Here’s How to Keep Your Houston Home Safe While You’re Away

Whether you’re off for a weekend at the beach or a longer summer getaway, prepping your home before you leave is just as important as packing your bags. Here’s a quick and practical list to keep your home safe, secure, and clean — so you come back to peace of mind, not problems.
✔️ Make Your Home Look Lived-In
Houston neighborhoods are pretty tight-knit, and nothing screams “nobody’s home” like a dark, quiet house for days.
- Lights on timers: Set indoor lamps and a TV on timers or use smart plugs you can control from your phone.
- Exterior lights: Check that your front and back yard motion-sensor lights work. Replace bulbs if needed.
- Trash bins: Ask a neighbor to put out and pull in your bins on trash day.
- Lawn care: If you’re gone more than a week, schedule a mow and plant watering.
- Driveway strategy: Park a car in the driveway or ask a neighbor to use the spot.
✔️ Loop in a Trusted Neighbor
Having someone nearby who knows you’re out of town is always a good idea.
- Let a neighbor know your dates and give them a way to reach you.
- Pause mail and package deliveries — or ask them to grab packages.
- Give them a spare key to check in, water indoor plants, and walk through in case something seems off.
✔️ Prep for Houston Heat (and the Unexpected)
Hot summers and afternoon storms can do damage if you’re not prepared.
- Turn off the main water valve or at least shut off water to washing machines and sinks.
- Set the thermostat: Keep it around 78°F to prevent mold and reduce energy use.
- Unplug electronics: TVs, modems, small appliances — anything not in use.
- Double-check locks: Doors, windows, and any backyard gates.
- Curtains/shades: Adjust to block views inside without making it obvious you’re gone.
✔️ Tidy Up Before You Go
You don’t want to return to bad smells or a trail of ants.
- Run the dishwasher and garbage disposal.
- Take out all trash (kitchen and bathroom).
- Wipe down counters and put away food.
- Don’t leave damp laundry in the washer.
✔️ Consider Smart Tech
Want to monitor things while away? A few smart upgrades go a long way.
- Video doorbells & security cams (Ring, Nest) to check activity from your phone.
- Smart locks let you open the door remotely if someone needs to get in.
- Smart thermostats help manage Houston’s summer heat while saving on A/C.
