5 Fall Curb Appeal Tips That Actually Work in Houston Heat
Y’all, fall curb appeal advice is everywhere this time of year… but most of it is written for homeowners dealing with frost and falling leaves in October. That’s not us. Here in Cypress, we’re often still hitting mid-80s well into October, hurricane season doesn’t wrap up until the end of November, and our lawns don’t know what “dormant” means. So here are five swaps that actually hold up in our climate.
1. Skip the mums-only look — go heat-tolerant first
Traditional fall mums can wilt fast in Houston’s lingering heat. Lead with pentas, marigolds, or ornamental peppers on your porch and in beds through September and early October — they handle the heat and give you real color. Save the mums for closer to November, once it actually cools off.
2. Style the porch, not just the door
A layered vignette makes more of an impact than one item alone — try a pair of urns or stacked planters flanking the entry, a seasonal doormat, and a lantern or two with warm-toned bulbs. One thing to flag: skip real pumpkins and gourds for now, or go faux — in our heat and humidity they tend to soften and mold fast, which isn’t the look you want in listing photos. Save real ones for closer to November.
3. Power-wash the driveway, walkway, and siding
Humidity here means mold and mildew build up quicker than most homeowners expect. A clean exterior reads as “well cared for” faster than almost anything else — and it’s the first thing a buyer notices pulling up.
4. Clean your gutters and check storm-readiness
This one’s Houston-specific: hurricane season runs through November 30, so “fall prep” here also means gutters clear and downspouts draining well away from the foundation — not just leaf cleanup.
5. Give the front door some attention
A fresh coat of paint or a good scrub on the front door, updated hardware, and a seasonal wreath go a long way. With sunset creeping earlier, check that your exterior lighting actually works, too.
A well cared-for home is easy to live in and always easier to sell — small maintenance now saves bigger stress later.
