Enhancing Your Home: Plant a Tree

Planting a tree in your yard is a valuable investment in your property’s future. Beyond enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your home, trees offer a multitude of benefits, from providing shade and reducing energy costs to improving air quality and fostering a healthier environment. And, the presence of well-maintained trees can also be a selling point, making your home more appealing to potential buyers when the time comes to sell.

This is an easy, fantastic way to enhance your outdoor space. Did you know that mid-November to late-February is the best time to plant trees in the Houston area. Planting in late fall or winter will allow roots to become established before moisture demanding summer sets in.

The Houston Climate and Tree Selection

Choosing the right tree for your backyard is crucial, especially in our Houston climate. We’re known for our hot and humid summers, and our trees need to be able to handle these conditions. Here are a couple of tree varieties that thrive in Houston:

  1. Live Oak: The Live Oak is a local favorite and for a good reason. It’s well-suited to our climate, providing ample shade and stunning greenery. Plus, its wide, sprawling branches make for an impressive focal point in any yard.
  2. Crape Myrtle: Another fantastic option, Crape Myrtles, is known for their vibrant summer blooms. They’re relatively low-maintenance and can add a pop of color to your backyard.
  3. Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum): These trees are well-suited to the Houston area, particularly in wetter or swampy soil. They have striking, feathery foliage and can grow quite tall, making them an excellent choice for providing shade.
  4. Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora): Known for their large, glossy leaves and fragrant, white flowers, Southern Magnolias are a classic choice for Southern landscapes. They tolerate the heat and humidity of Houston quite well.
  5. Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis): These trees are prized for their brilliant fall foliage, which ranges from vibrant reds to oranges. They are drought-tolerant once established, making them a good choice for our climate.
  6. Texas Redbud (Cercis canadensis var. texensis): Texas Redbuds are native to the region and are known for their showy pink or purple spring blossoms. They are a smaller tree, making them ideal for smaller yards or as ornamental additions.
  7. Mexican Sycamore (Platanus mexicana): These trees are well-suited to the Houston climate and are known for their striking, large, maple-like leaves. They provide excellent shade and can tolerate the summer heat.

These tree varieties offer a range of sizes, appearances, and characteristics, allowing homeowners to choose the one that best suits their preferences and landscape needs. When planting any tree, remember to provide proper care, including watering, mulching, and occasional pruning, to ensure their healthy growth.

Why Trees Help Your Home

  • Trees boost curb appeal. The presence of larger trees in yards and as street trees can add 3 to 15 percent to home values throughout neighborhoods.
  • Trees can shade buildings, windows and air-conditioning units. Homes with well-situated trees can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and save 20 to 50 percent in heating costs.
  • Trees can help with water drainage.

Planting Tips:

Here’s a concise checklist to guide you through the tree planting process:

  1. Choose the Right Spot: Select a location that gets adequate sunlight and is away from any structures or other trees that might shade your new tree.
  2. Prepare the Soil: Ensure the soil is well-drained and amend it with organic matter to improve fertility.
  3. Dig the Hole: Make a hole that’s as deep as the tree’s root ball but two to three times wider. This allows the roots to spread easily.
  4. Plant the Tree: Remove the tree from its container and gently loosen the roots. Place it in the hole, ensuring it’s at the same level as the surrounding soil.
  5. Water and Mulch: Give your newly planted tree a good soak and add a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool.
  6. Regular Care: Keep an eye on your tree, especially during the first year. Water it consistently, and don’t forget to trim dead or damaged branches.

By following these simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to creating a beautiful, shaded oasis right in your backyard.
